Breast Feeding

Mother’s milk can have a significant impact on brain development and other aspects of child development. This is something that you can support. Breast milk can be pumped and stored and then fed to the baby while in child care. How might this impact you? Babies that are nursed and fed mothers milk are less likely to have colic, are more likely to have better health and better behavior.

The childcare center I work at is an onsite center for employees at a hospital. Most of the mothers are able to leave work to nurse their babies during the day or they have facilities availabe to pump andstore milk for their children. It is a wonderful benefit that the hospital provides, because the hospital recognizes the impeotance of breast milk.

i was unable to open some of the sights on breast feeding. I have however studied information on it for years and am a full supporter of breast feeding.

I think breast feeding is wonderful if you are able to do it. I did it for one child then I was unable to for the rest because it affected my health, so I had to quite. If you can do it I agree it is the best way to go. It is relaxing, bonding, easier than heating bottle, and better for baby.

I understand that breast feeding is very important for the baby and also for the mum. My question is there is any negative effects for Mums after breast feeding? One Mum told me she lost calcium after breast feeding . Is that possible? Thanks

Sounds like a medical or nutritional question. I'm sorry I don't know the answer. Perhaps someone else who reads this will.

This course and its information has not seized to amaze me. I have read a lot in the years and this study is priceless. With regards to Mom's who have to go back to work, us as caregivers need to encourage mom's to express and continue to breastfeed as long as they can due to the benefits. I believe Mom's who cannot breastfeed should be encouraged to do everything with the bottle as if they were breastfeeding - such as closeness, communication etc. As I believe this contributes greatly to the child's brain and emotional development. Why is it that society places so much pressure on mom's to work, than on mom's being moms? Work places should have places of care built in so that mom's may breast feed when needed, even during work hours. Surely it is possible to do this?

It's been proven time and time again that the nutrients in breast milk is what's best for the human body. There is a reason that mothers produce milk for their children - a natural reason. Whether the mother has to pump for her child because he won't latch or whether that child will breastfeed - the best option ALWAYS is human milk for humans. Period.

I'm a firm believe in breast milk. I've breastfed all of my children. I've actually looked into donating my breast milk to me local NICU to help premature babies.

Lots of great information. The link about Myopia is a broken link.
I wasn't aware that breastmilk is different if the baby is premature.
Amazing how the body knows just what to do to provide for an early delivery.

I try to get all my new moms to breast feed but some of them say that is so gross..I have them set and read about it and then it makes them think how much they are helping their baby.

I have always been the person that thought that it didnt matter if you were breast fed or fed from a bottle. But i didnt know that there were such differences such as being overweight and such just because you were breast fed and not fed from a bottle. I also didnt know that the mother had affects from breast feeding also.

i never thought the whole breast feeding thing mattered for the baby i thought it was just food in their stomachs. but it is healthier for the baby and it is healthier for the parent which really impresses me. i didn't think breastfeeding was that important.

I have alwasy heard its better to be breast fed then to be fed from a bottle but i didnt realize how much better it is and how much healthier it is for the children. I didnt know that the parent had affects from breast feeding as well that was kind of iteresting to me.

Every new mom should watch these videos and read all the information on the benefits of breast feeding. In the long run it is easier and cheaper. After reading all the info on the benefits, I am just astounded. I always knew it was better but "wow."I am a firm believer now.

I agree with those articles about breastfeeding that show evidence that breastfed babies become more intelligent than those who are fed with formula milk.
Breastfeeding helps to attachment bond. I remember during the breastfeeding time, when my daughter was crying, I take her close to my breast and she relax and feel safe.
Thanks,
Catalina

I think breastfeeding is definitely the way to go. The benefits it gives to mom and baby is amazing. This course has such great information. Stuff about the brain I never knew before. There is still so much to learn.

I have learned so much about the importance of breast milk for a baby's development. I always knew that it was better for them then formula, however I never knew by how much. The antibodies in the breast milk are essential for developing the baby's immune system. The didn't know that breastfed babies are less likely to be overweight, less constipated, less colic, and have a lesser chance of SIDS, asthma, colitis, and cancers. It is also good to know that breastfeeding is beneficial to the mother as well as it can help her lose weight, lower her risk of breast/uterine/ovarian cancer, and a lesser chance of heart disease and diabetes. I never knew you could track the amount of wet and poopy diapers to tell if the baby is getting enough to eat.
The article about breastfeeding and its affect on social ladder was interesting as it suggests that those breast fed are more successful in adult life. It is also interesting that breastfed children have higher IQs.
The videos about fat intake were very educational and had great information.

I am all for those who breast feed. The health risk are lower and the bond between baby and mom are greater then a bottle feed baby. How ever i was unable to breast feed my baby due to lack of milk production.I had to bottle feed formula to my baby.my bond with my baby was just as strong and she is perfectly healthy

The Body Story video is amazing. It would be a perfect video for everyone to see. How wonderfully our bodies are made and how important it is for us to take good care of them.

I always knew that breast feeding was better for the baby more so than formula or bottle feeding but didnt know some of the other benefits like less likely from SIDS, colitis, colds, and ear infections. It is great to know there is so many benefits.

I forgot my question earlier...is the mother and infant still gaining great benefits if the mother pumps and has the daycare provider feed the child by bottle? They're still getting breast milk and still being breast fed at home just not at daycare.

I thought that formuls had the same nutrients that breast milk has until I read these articles.

Unknown said...

I do think that breastfeeding is best how ever is it true that you should not shake the breast milk because it ruins it? And if so is it still better than formula?

CR Petersen said...

This is a question I'm hoping someone else answers because I do not know.

I know breast feeding is great for babies but didn't know all the benefts that came from it.

my son was in the NICU for 2 months because he was born 10 weeks premature. his mother had to pump breast milk. she hated it but the milk made him grow strong and healthy after birth

The course gives a lot of information and the videos give great summaries that would benefit parents.

Our Child Care Center has a Breastfeeding room available, Asa well as procedures in place to store breast milk for our babies. I was already aware of all the benefits of breastfeeding, but I did learn a new tidbit that will change how I encourage mothers to breastfeed! That introducing a bottle too early will cause a baby to prefer the longer nipple and easier flow of milk. I wonder if anyone has developed a nipple that will more closely simulate mothers breast?

Im a big believer in breast feeding babies. Not only is there a lower risk for SIDS, colds, ear infections, cancer, asthma, being overweight but you get that special bond with your baby that no one else can have.

James Hudlin said...

I also agree about breast-feeding. SIDS was something that had me close to the crib every night so i was doing everything i could think of including begging my wife to breast feed, good to know the best way is the natural way- Great topic- James Hudlin

great thoughts on fats - they are essential for brain function!!

Raichael Nelson said...

I love that they refer to the Standard American Diet as SAD. It really is. I love that more importance is being put on fats, and the need for them in our diet.

The importance of breast milk cannot be overstated. I'm so glad that more and more hospitals are putting more emphasis on breast milk rather than powdered formula.

The bodily functions are so miraculous. It's amazing that the breast milk nutrients provide the correct proportions for the baby's size.

What resources are out there to help mothers who are struggling with breast feeding? Do you see a change in our culture that is more in support of this healthy choice?

CR Petersen said...

This organization provides a great deal of help. Yes, there is a change in the culture. http://www.llli.org/

I never realised how crucial breastfeeding is to a child’s development in general and I could see clearly why it should be promoted to newborns everywhere. But there are some that were formula fed and still turned out to be normal children. and I was just wondering what can I do as a child care provider during lesson time if the child’s cognitive development is not as quick as his peers?
